The creative process behind the album
This year I’ve had the pleasure of creating the artwork for my husband Dan’s latest album. Having always worked on his covers, this time I was keen to collaborate with another designer, or source the work of an artist. After searching for inspiration we found the work of Matt Cuisick. His work was the perfect fit and after listening to the album Matt very kindly agreed to share his favourite piece of work – Leviathan.
With Matt on board, and the cover sourced, I was tasked with exploring the colour palette and typography. We decided to take inspiration from the colours within Matt’s artwork and concentrated on developing a style that we could carry throughout.
When creating the inner pages, I chose to develop a journey, and the finished book consists of an introduction, content to support each song, followed by a short story. The album was recorded entirely outdoors so, for each of the 8 songs, there is a location co-ordinate, lyrics page and a spread with an image of the song being recorded outdoors. Each of these is sandwiched with a full spread photo taken on location.
The music itself is an even greater accomplishment so do listen to the album or order your book. If you are local then please come along to one of Dan’s launch gigs: Glasgow on 31st May and Edinburgh on 15th June.
