Light Lane

Monday, January 19th, 2009

There are a couple of us at ILCK that bike into work daily and that’s not always a happy prospect in the winter. Edinburgh is pretty good for cycling around – apart from the massive pot holes on Leith walk (don’t get me started) but even still it can be pretty dicey when a double decker bus comes zooming up alongside you leaving you little breathing space. These guys at Altitude have developed an amazing idea – the Light lane. A lazer shoots a beam of light resembling a bike lane, clearly warning motorists of the space they need to leave in order to mantain safety for both parties. I don’t think this has been developed yet but I think it’s a great idea and a good way to encourage more people to get on their bike. I would totally back this and hope it does get produced.

The internet explained

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

We have spent many lunches in ILCK trying to work out how the internet works. Are there really mega cables that go under the sea and join up the countries together or is it by some satellite thingy? We have heard rumors of Scottish diggers accidentally cutting off Iceland’s internet whilst doing a bit of haphazard digging up North. Don’t believe me, then read this.

But at last here’s a comprehenisive map of how all the cables around the world join up the internet. It’s true, they go under the sea.

Britain from Above

Monday, August 4th, 2008

I think this looks beautiful. It’s from a new BBC series that makes use of satellite technology to create stunning images of Britain from above. Great Footage. Mark Sanders reports.

Beck’s Canvas

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Becks have long been a supporter of British contemporary art, but a new project they’re undertaking called Beck’s Canvas will really bring art to the masses. They have asked for RCA graduates to submit a piece of work that can be printed onto the side of their bottles and then distributed to all whom drink their beer. I think this is a really interesting idea, as although the gallery is the most common way to display visual art, it has it’s drawbacks, most notably only a few brave souls will ever actually enter into the art gallery and I imagine most people find the gallery’s contents aren’t worth seeing anyway.

So 4 graduates have been picked and soon their work will be in the public’s realm so it’ll be interesting to see how well it goes down (the art that is, not the beer).

Nothing new under the sun

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Just found an interesting post about how much of apple’s current designs are inspired by Dieter Rams, a key designer for Braun in the 60′s.

As a designer myself, I’m always looking to inspiration from the past and what’s around me, so I guess it’s no surprise that apple do the same. See below if you dont’ believe me. Braun on the left, apple on the right.

Running out of room?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

I have a bit of a habit for collecting stuff. Currently I’m living in a flat so I don’t have any stairs in my home but if I did, this would be a great solution for keeping books.

This genius idea came from levitate architecture in London.
