The Rise of the Designer Bakery

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Nothing says homely like the smell of freshly baked bread. ‘Homely’ isn’t what this new breed of bakeries are going for though.

Rather, they are paving the way by simply being darn right cool; some are sleek and feel more like a chic boutique hotel, some are rustic yet industrial, others are bright, clean, clinical. Either way, count me as the newest fan of the Designer Bakery club (I wish there was an actual club).

Haarfest

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Off later today to play with Dan Lyth at Haarfest, Fence Records Summer festival – looking forward to it! May even join in with some sports activities tomorrow if the weather holds out, if not, I’m sure I’ll just grab myself a wee chippie in Anstruther.

We get to share the stage tonight with Kenny Anderson who is up for the Mercury Music Prize as his album with Jon Hopkins is one of the 12 shortlisted albums of the year. Looking forward to it.

After this gig, back to finishing recording the album outdoors. Tonight we’ll give out another track for free on a nice wee cd we’ve decorated and packaged cheaply but in a nice and one-off hand-made style. Here’s a shot of the process last time.

CD onbody design to the left and then the ‘Dan Lyth’ strip of scrap fabric was sewn into the cardboard cd cases.

Recorderbeast

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

When I was at primary school I thought I would play the recorder forever and vowed never to give it up, which of course, I did.

I still have a soft spot for it and so naturally, I LOVE this ‘personal God’ of artist Cat Johnson: the Recorderbeast complete with tiny white cowboy boots.

Ixxi

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Just back from holiday and as usual, right back into the swing of things. We have a busy few weeks approaching with weddings / stag / hen dos. My husband is oragnising the church music for all the weddings, an album he wants to finish by the end of October and a gig at a Fence Records festival. So I’ve assigned myself the task of sorting our back room, soon to be baby room/study. So many options and not really narrowed down plans yet.

I’d love it if we could print something with Ixxi – it describes itself as a ‘modular connecting system’ that in turn produces large scale wall art. You can enlarge your own image, create a collage or select from their image bank that comes in set sizes. The starting price is €24,90 for an 80×60 print!

Future Maps

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

At long last – the perfect up-to-date map! These maps designed by The Future Mapping Company have many features I have been looking for:

detail

up-to-date information

good colouring – options for a modern take on the bluesy / green and some brighter ones too

and the option to have it plastic coated…

ALL for an extremely reasonable price.

The only argument against it is perhaps I have too many maps already. However vintage maps may look lovely but studying a map with Persia on it is not helpful for improving my geography. I think it warrants a purchase. Big well done to the guys who created them.

Recording Outdoors: in Sydney

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

The genius Mr Alastair MacGregor found a nice spot overlooking the Sydney opera house to record some more for the next album, all recorded outdoors. Thus adding another point on the recording locations map! You can see a video of me concentrating very hard as tourists looked on whilst I recorded some clapping on the equator.

Making a Moodboard

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Moodboards are a great help when I need to see all the things that are inspiring me on one page. It also helps me edit as I collate the images , I discard the ones that don’t ‘fit’. Often I find them encouraging as the finished board looks more together than I felt my thoughts were.

I am very thankful that in the next month or so, we are replacing our damp kitchen and I was looking through my kitchen tags – and I found there was little need for a moodboard other than affirming the choices we’ve made…

I’ve made a number of personal moodboards. The earliest was from a couple of years ago when my head was spinning with ideas for moving into our 1st ‘bought’ flat, I have deviated slightly but the current mood is not far off…

A more recent one was to help my sister plan her wedding this coming August…

And lastly, some pages from moodboards to help me try and style friends Kid Adrift
